Welcome to Doc Scanner ("the App", "we", "our", or "us"). This Privacy Policy explains how Doc Scanner handles information when you use our mobile application available on Android and iOS. Doc Scanner is a fully local, offline-first application. We are committed to your privacy. The App does not collect, transmit, or share your personal data with any external servers, third parties, or analytics services. By installing or using the App, you agree to the practices described below.
Doc Scanner does not collect, store, or transmit any of the following:
All data created within the App is stored exclusively on your device in the App's private storage directory. This data is never uploaded to any server and is inaccessible to anyone other than you.
If you create a local account within the App, the following information is stored in an encrypted local database (Hive) on your device:
| Data | Purpose | Stored Where |
|---|---|---|
| Display name | Personalise the App experience | Device only |
| Email address | Local account identifier | Device only |
| Password (hashed) | Local authentication | Device only |
| Profile image path | Account avatar | Device only |
| Account creation date | Local record | Device only |
This account is entirely local. It is not synced to any cloud service and is not accessible by the developer.
| Data | Purpose | Stored Where |
|---|---|---|
| Captured & imported images | Document pages | Device only |
| Edited / enhanced images | Document pages | Device only |
| Generated PDF files | Exported documents | Device only |
| OCR (extracted text) | Searchable text layer | Device only |
| Document metadata (name, dates) | Organisation | Device only |
All files are stored in the App's private documents directory (/data/data/com.docscanner.app/files/ on Android and the sandboxed App container on iOS). Other apps cannot access these files without your explicit permission.
The App requests the following device permissions. All permissions are used solely to provide the App's features and are never used to collect personal data.
| Permission | Why It Is Needed |
|---|---|
CAMERA | Capture photos of documents |
READ_MEDIA_IMAGES (Android 13+) | Import images from your gallery |
READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android ≤12) | Import images from your gallery |
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android ≤9) | Save PDFs to shared storage |
INTERNET | Reserved for future optional features; currently unused |
| Permission | Why It Is Needed |
|---|---|
| Photo Library | Import images from your photo library |
| Files & Folders | Import PDF documents from your Files app |
| Camera | Capture photos of documents |
You can revoke any permission at any time from your device's Settings without affecting previously created documents.
The App uses Google ML Kit for Optical Character Recognition (OCR). All OCR processing happens entirely on-device. Your document images and extracted text are never sent to Google's servers or any other external service. ML Kit's text recognition model is downloaded to your device on first use over Wi-Fi; after download, it operates fully offline.
For more information, see Google ML Kit's privacy documentation.
The App declares the INTERNET permission on Android. This permission is included to support potential future optional features (such as cloud backup). At the current version, the App makes no network requests. No data leaves your device. You can verify this with any network monitoring tool.
When you use the App's Share or Export feature, you may share a PDF or image using your device's native share sheet (e.g., to email, messaging apps, or cloud storage). This action is performed entirely by you and your chosen app. Doc Scanner does not control, monitor, or have access to what happens with documents after you choose to share them.
Doc Scanner does not integrate any of the following:
The App is built with open-source Flutter packages. None of the included packages transmit data to external services.
Doc Scanner does not knowingly collect any personal information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). Since no personal data is collected by the App whatsoever, the App is safe for users of all ages. If you believe a child has inadvertently provided personal information through the App, please contact us — though we do not store any data server-side.
Because all data is stored locally on your device:
We have no access to your data and therefore cannot experience a server-side data breach.
You are in full control of your data at all times.
Your device's operating system may include your App data in automatic backups (e.g., Android Auto Backup, iCloud Backup). This is controlled by your OS settings, not by the App. If you do not want your document scans included in OS backups, you can disable backup for this App in your device settings.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify you within the App. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights regarding personal data including access, correction, deletion, and portability. Since Doc Scanner stores all data locally on your device and does not collect or process personal data on any external system, you exercise these rights directly through the App's own interface (delete documents, clear account) or by uninstalling the App.
For users in the European Union (GDPR) or California (CCPA/CPRA): because we do not collect, process, or store personal data on any server, we do not maintain data subject records externally. All data is in your direct possession and control.
